A SEASON FOR DRAGONS

Between childhood and fairy tales
Stretch wonderment and winding trails,
Through summer days and wooded dales
Where leaves grow green as dragon scales.
But,as we age,the picture pales,
Of maidens,knights and Holy Grails
The /I've-no-time-for-that/prevails
To dull the colours and details.
Great shadows fall on hills and vales,
As clouds more corpulent than whales
Roll overhead on wings like sail
That beat the air like threshing flails.
And branches thrash like serpents'tails ,
And summer somersaults and fails,
While winds are whipped to autumn gales
That howl the way a creature wails.
Hollow as caves from which it hails,
Comes burning breath this beast exhales.
The tongue of flame that this entails
Leaves leaves as brown as risted nails.
